Ice: USHL Futures Draft selections

The Indiana Ice began steps toward their 10th season in the USHL this week with the two USHL drafts.
The first day is the so-called Phase I draft (formerly known as the Futures Draft), in which teams select underage players who are longer-term projects. Some are immediate prospects, too.
On Tuesday, the Phase II draft (the Entry Draft) takes place. The Ice have four first-round picks in the Entry Draft. (note that all ht/wt/DOB data is from eliteprospects.com)

Quoting Ice coach Jeff Brown: “Our organization is ecstatic about the talent level of our selections tonight,” said head coach Jeff Brown.  “So many different things fell into place for us in this draft.  All these selection will be future stars on the Indiana Ice roster.

Round 1
1. Cameron Askew (tendered), F, Cushing Academy, MA
6-1, 185, South Boston, MA. DOB 5-13-97 (age 16). Boston University commit, big player, likely to come & make an impact right away. 16-19-35 in 29 games at Cushing. A tender, he'll be in Indiana next fall. Right shot. Projects as a power forward type with tremendous skill. Participated in the USNDTP Select 15 player development camp, where the U.S. Hockey Report ranked him the No. 5 forward.

6. Zach Osburn, D, Honeybaked
5-8, 173, Plymouth, MI. DOB: 2-7-97 (age 16). Michigan State commit. Totaled 5-9-14 with 32 PIM in 24 games with the Honeybaked U16 team last season. He was also drafted in the 11th round by the OHL Guelph Storm. Ranked as the No. 6 defenseman at the Selects 15 camp by the U.S. Hockey Report. Left shot. Described as a strong skater with a good shot.

Round 2
1. Denis Smirnov (tendered), F, Wilkes Barre-Scranton Knights
5-7, 139, Russia. DOB: 8-97 (age 16). One of several players with Russian ties on the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Knights, Smirnov was part of a national championship team. A big scorer with the Knights. Link to a YouTube video of Smirnov's work

6. Vasili Kolias, D, Chicago Mission
5-9, 143. DOB: 2-8-97 (age 16). Kolias totaled 5-8-13 in 16 games with the Chicago Mission U16 team. Had 2 goals and 4 assists in 6 games at the national tournament this year. Like Askew & Osburn, participated in the Select 15 camp this fall. Ranked as the No. 5 defenseman at the camp by the U.S. Hockey Report.

13. Adam Marsh, F, Chicago Young America
5-8, 134. DOB: 8-22-97 (age 16). Marsh played for the Chicago Young Americans U16 squad this year, totaling 5-4-9 and 26 PIM in 40 games.

Round 3
14. Troy Terry, C, Colorado Thunderbirds
5-7, 130. DOB: 9-10-97 (age 16). Called a "small, crafty forward with good offensive instincts and a quick stick" by the U.S. Hockey Report. Had 14 goals and 35 assists in 49 games this season, inkling 14 points on the power play. Denver University commit.

Round 4
1. Benjamin Blacker, G, Brampton, Ontario
5-9, 154. DOB 4-23-97 (age 16). Left-catching goaltender who had a 1.53 GAA and .935 save percentage this year for the Brampton Midget AAA team, and a 2.35 GAA and .941 save percentage in five games in the OJHL, going 3-1-1 with a shutout. . Western Michigan commit.

Round 7
1. Jacob Wilson, D, St. Louis Blues U16
5-8, 155. DOB: 2-27-97 (age 16). Wilson played for the St. Louis Blues U16 team this year. Had 4 goals and 12 assists in 26 games, as well as 37 PIMs.
